Leaving Your Home Alone: Security Checklist

Leaving Your Home Alone: Security Checklist

Getting ready to go on a much-needed holiday? Here are a few things you can do to ensure the security of your home while you are gone.

  1. Install light timers in the house and motion detectors outside. The more lit up your home is at night, the better. Set the inside timers randomly so they don’t all come on at once—this will help give the impression that there are people in the home and could help deter someone from attempting a break-in.
  2. Tell your neighbours you’ll be on vacation so they can keep an eye on your property. Newspapers and mail piling up at the front door is a big tell that nobody is around, so make sure to ask someone to collect those items while you are away.
  3. Lock up everything! Make sure to double check that all windows and doors are locked properly before you leave and make sure to lock up any lawn equipment, bikes, or tools.
  4. If you have a home security system, make sure to enable it. That may sound silly but for many people, once they’ve had a security system for a while, they have a tendency not to use it as often as they did when they first got it. Just out of sheer habit, you may forget to turn it on before you go… add it to your checklist so you don’t forget.
  5. Upgrade your door and window locks. There is a fantastic selection of high quality locks available to help upgrade the security of your home without breaking the bank. If you live in an older home, it’s probably a good idea to update your locks.
  6. If you’re a renter, make sure you have renter’s insurance. This is just a good idea, regardless if you are going on a trip or not. Many renter’s fail to do this, thinking their landlord’s insurance will cover the loss or damage of their personal items, when in fact that isn’t case.
